Current Facilities:VRTC Laboratory
The UKZN Science and Technology Park (STIP) was established as a result of an initial partnership between the University of KwaZulu-Natal and ESKOM. The partnership is open to other industries and organizations with interest in SET research and innovation. The main objective of STIP is to foster research for product advancement and innovation through knowledge partnerships. Projects undertaken in the Park are in line with its main theme of Energy and Environment for Sustainable Social Development. Future projects could encompass other fields such as bio-technology and ICT to nurture hi-tech industries in commercialization of innovative ideas and technologies.
The activities of STIP are divided into the following three main areas:
1)Creation of awareness in SET through community outreach programmes by the Science and Technology Education Centre (STEC).
2)Research in Centres such as the VRTC, HVDC and Infra-red and Aqua Technology, which have been established through partnerships with industry.
3)Commercialisation of innovative research outputs in collaboration with the UKZN Innovation Company, industry and national organisations.
